Using Flip Up Sights with Magnified Optics
Magnified optics such as low power variable scopes and fixed 3x or 4x prisms have become common on modern rifles. They make precise shots easier, but they also add a single point of failure. Flip up backup sights give you a way to keep shooting if the optic is damaged, fogged, or loses its mount. Pairing the two takes a little planning.
Height and clearance. Unlike a red dot, a magnified optic usually blocks the irons completely, so co-witnessing is rarely possible. That is fine: the sights stay folded until you need them. What matters is that the folded sights fit under the scope without touching the turrets, the objective bell, or the eyepiece. Measure the space under your optic before you buy, and choose low profile sights that fold flat.
Rear sight placement. Mount the rear sight as far back on the receiver as your scope rings allow, which gives a longer sight radius and better accuracy. Make sure the rear aperture is easy to reach with your thumb when you are wearing gloves.
The quick removal option. Many shooters run quick detach scope mounts. If the optic fails, they pull it off and flip the irons up. Practice this at home so you know how long it takes and where you will put the scope.
Offset as an alternative. Some rifles use 45 degree offset sights instead, so you can roll the rifle and use the irons without removing the scope. These add width but are fast for close targets.
Zero and practice. Zero your irons at 50 yards with the scope removed, then confirm the scope still returns to zero after you remount it. Run a short drill on every range trip: optic down, sights up, three shots.
One option built for this setup is the Ozark Armament FBUIS-B, a low profile folding pair that stores flat under most optics.

Rhino Red Dot Sight
If you're pairing flip-up irons with an optic, the Rhino red dot sight from Ozark Armament is a 1x reflex sight with a 4 MOA dot you can switch between red and green, five brightness settings, and a 28mm multi-coated lens. It ships with a cantilever Picatinny mount set up to co-witness with standard iron sights, and the nitrogen-purged aluminum body is sealed against water, dust and fog. It's built to hold zero under rifle and 12-gauge shotgun recoil.
